⚖️ THREE HOURS. ONE URGENT DEADLINE. THE RIGHT LEGAL SUPPORT SECURED.📍 Access to Justice - in ActionYesterday, we helped a vulnerable client facing committal proceedings to secure specialist barrister representation through the legal aid scheme. When we first met our client, we had just 3 hours to get the necessary arrangements in place.3 hours to identify the need.3 hours to coordinate with the right legal professionals.3 hours to help ensure our client had access to the legal advice and representation needed to make informed decisions. And we met the deadline.Working collaboratively with our trusted partner organisations, University of Plymouth, BTL Solicitors and KBG Chambers we helped ensure that our client had the right support in place at a serious time.⚖️ What are committal proceedings?Committal proceedings can arise where someone is alleged to have breached a court order, such as an injunction. Depending on the circumstances and the court's findings, the consequences can be serious, including imprisonment. These proceedings are a specialist area of law. Understanding the allegations, the evidence, the relevant legal principles and the available options is essential.💡 Here is something important to know about legal aidLegal aid for committal proceedings is not means-tested.That is an important point because people facing these proceedings may be worried about the cost of obtaining legal representation. Do not assume that your income or savings automatically prevent you from accessing legal aid.The precise arrangements will depend on the nature of the proceedings and the applicable legal aid provisions, so seek specialist advice as soon as possible.❤️ Why this matters to usAt Cornwall Legal Centre, we understand that people can find themselves facing serious legal proceedings without knowing where to turn.We believe access to justice means more than simply telling people to find a solicitor. It means helping them navigate the system, identifying the right support and working collaboratively with legal professionals when time is critical.Yesterday's work is an example of what can be achieved when people work together with urgency and a shared commitment to ensuring that vulnerable clients are not left to navigate complex proceedings alone. If you are facing committal proceedings, please do not try to deal with them alone. Get legal advice urgently.📞 07792 609049📧 info@cornwall-legal.org🌐 www.cornwall-legal.orgCORNWALL LEGAL CENTRE CICJustice • Equality • C#cornwalllegalcentree#committalproceedingsr#LegalAid #AccessToJustices#plymouth #devonandcornwalln#CourtRepresentatione#injunctionsn#housinglawh#CivilLaw #legaladvicee#barristersb#solicitorss#justiceequalitycommunityycommunity

HABEAS CORPUS… AND OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULDN’T SAY ON A FIRST DATE!![]()
We need to talk about Latin in law! 📚![]()
Latin was phased out as the formal language of the County Courts years ago, as part of making legal proceedings more accessible. But some Latin words and phrases still manage to sneak into everyday legal conversations.![]()
And sometimes, they sound rather more dramatic than they actually are! 😂![]()
Recently, we attended a few personal injury cases for our long-standing instructing solicitors. Without even thinking, I found myself talking about “quantum”.![]()
My lay client stopped me and asked: “What's quantum?”![]()
I was mortified... 🤦🏻♀️Here I was, supposedly making the law accessible, casually throwing around legal jargon without explaining what I meant. Not my finest moment... but then again, apparently I am 40% Italian ...![]()
So, for anyone wondering, quantum simply means “how much?” In a personal injury claim, it refers to the amount of compensation being sought or awarded.![]()
But that's not the only Latin you'll hear in law…![]()
⚖️ Actus reus - the guilty act.![]()
🧠 Mens rea - the guilty mind or intention.![]()
📖 Obiter - a judge's comment that isn't essential to the decision.![]()
🔍 Inter alia - among other things.![]()
👀 In absentia - in someone's absence.![]()
🚨 Sub poena - under penalty; it sounds far more scandalous than it is!![]()
And then there's habeas corpus - which, despite sounding like something you'd whisper in a rather questionable Latin lesson, is a fundamental legal safeguard concerning unlawful detention. 😂![]()
At Cornwall Legal Centre CIC, we believe legal language should help people understand their rights, not leave them wondering whether they accidentally enrolled in a Classics degree.![]()
Over to you! 👇![]()
What Latin phrases do you use? Which ones make you roll your eyes? And have you ever used a legal term only to realise that the person listening had absolutely no idea what you meant?![]()
We promise not to judge. De minimis… well, let's not get carried away 😉![]()
DM us your favourite (or most ridiculous) Latin phrase.![]()

⚖️ TEN YEARS ON. WHY ARE WE STILL EXPERIENCING THIS?![]()
Inspired by the themes explored in Michelle Keegan’s ITV drama, The Blame.![]()
Ten years ago, I worked for Devon and Cornwall Police.![]()
During that time, I experienced behaviour from a male colleague. I was left alone with him and he touched me, justifying it by saying “it’s alright, you’re from Redruth”. He then asked me to perform a sex act on him in an open-plan office, while senior police chiefs sat nearby, pretending not to hear. ![]()
I reported it, and he was sacked, but I have never forgotten that experience.![]()
And now, a decade later, we are still having conversations about sexual misconduct, misogyny and accountability within policing.![]()
The recent misconduct hearing published by Devon & Cornwall Police on 9 October 2026 has brought these issues into sharp focus once again.![]()
Read it here: www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/SysSiteAssets/foi-media/devon-and-cornwall/misconduct/2026/july/unna... ![]()
This is bigger than one officer. It is about institutional culture.![]()
When women experience inappropriate or sexualised behaviour in the workplace, what happens next matters.![]()
Are they listened to?![]()
Are concerns taken seriously?![]()
Are those in positions of authority prepared to intervene?![]()
Or does the institution close ranks, leaving women to carry the consequences while the organisation carries on?![]()
These are questions that deserve honest answers.![]()
The themes explored in #itv #theblame are institutional secrecy, misogyny and the difficult question of who can be trusted… and it was based on a #truestory ! This resonates because these are not merely fictional concerns. They are issues that demand serious scrutiny wherever people exercise public power.![]()
Why I am speaking out![]()
I am now part of a small, women-led law centre in Cornwall. Through Cornwall Legal Centre CIC, we support people seeking answers and accountability, including women who report abuse involving police officers.![]()
Our work has brought us into contact with the police in circumstances that have made our commitment to this work all the more important.![]()
We will not stop supporting women simply because their allegations concern people in positions of authority.![]()
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall must make serious and sustained efforts to address concerns about policing culture, restore public confidence and demonstrate that inappropriate conduct will be taken seriously.![]()
That means more than public statements. It means meaningful accountability, transparent processes and a working environment in which women can speak out without fear of being ignored or disbelieved.![]()
I am sharing my experience because 10 years is a long time to wait for meaningful change.![]()
Women deserve to feel safe. They deserve to be heard. And they deserve to know that the rules apply to everyone - including those who wear the uniform.![]()
Silence should never be the price of belonging.![]()
